Abstract

Objective: To describe the main characteristics of intraorbital foreign body cases, their management and resolution.

Materials and methods: A single center case-series retrospective study was performed in Argentina, including eyes of patients with intraorbital foreign body who attended the emergency department of the hospital in December 2021. The main outcomes to be evaluated were gender, age, time to consultation, type of foreign body, clinical features of presentation, complementary diagnostic studies, therapeutic resolution, as well as the visual outcome of the patients.

Results: Five male cases were included, with a mean age of 48.8 ± 17.2 years (31-68). The mean time to consultation was 5.05 ± 6.1 days (0.25-15). Initial and final visual acuity was amaurosis in 3 cases. In the other two, in one case it improved from 2 to 10/10 and in the other from finger count to 1 meter to 6/10. The materials of the intraorbital foreign body found were wood, plastic, glass and metal. In all cases the patients were evaluated with computed tomography, were hospitalized and operated.

Conclusion: The intraorbital foreign body evaluated in this study occurred in middle-aged men and most of them produced a severe visual impairment. For their management, hospitalization and subsequent surgical resolution were necessary. Computed tomography was the complementary diagnostic method used in all cases. The importance of the multidisciplinary team in health care settings with adequate capacity to manage these patients is highlighted.
