Abstract

Objetive: To present a clinical case of Susac syndrome, an infrequent pathology.

Clinical case: A 32-year-old male patient presents to the ophthalmology emergency service with a sudden onset of scotoma in the right eye, accompanied by amnesia and difficulty with urination. Ophthalmological examination reveals occlusion of a branch of the retinal artery. A diagnosis of Susac syndrome is made in conjunction with the neurology service. During hospitalization, the patient develops auditory symptoms and scotomas in the left eye. Treatment with methylprednisolone, gammaglobulins, mycophenolate, and acetylsalicylic acid is administered with a favorable response

Conclusion: Susac syndrome affects the microvasculature of the brain, retina and inner ear, and requires a multidisciplinary approach, as described in the present case. This is relevant both for its diagnosis by means of complementary studies, and for its treatment, by means of timely immunosuppressive therapy and thus avoiding sequels.
