Objective: To report the clinical case of a patient diagnosed with sebaceous carcinoma and to describe the therapy administered.
Clinical case: 35-year-old male patient complaining of foreign body sensation of the left eye of nine months of evolution. The patient added that in recent weeks he had had bloody epiphora. He also referred he had visited another institution where he had been diagnosed with chalazion and scheduled for a surgical procedure that he did not undergo.
An excisional biopsy of the lesion on the upper eyelid was performed that evidenced the presence of a sebaceous carcinoma with involved margins. The comprehensive oncologic tests carried out yielded normal results; a wide excision of the lesion with free 6-mm margins, followed by upper lid reconstruction using the Cutler-Beard technique, was also performed. No recurrence has been reported to date.
Conclusion: Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare, though potentially fatal, neoplasia that can clinically and histologically simulate benign entities; therefore, its presence should be suspected for its diagnosis and timely administration of treatment.
