Abstract

Objective: To present a case report of a pacient with unilateral sclopetaria chorioretinitis.

Case report: A 28-year-old male patient with history of gunshot trauma in the left malar region of 15 days of evolution attended the ophthalmology department for a complete evaluation prior to maxillofacial surgery. On physical examination his visual acuity was 10/10 on the right eye and hand movement on the left eye best corrected. Fundus examination did not show any particularity in right eye, but in left eye there were retinal and subretinal hemorrhages in inferior and temporal sector, compromising macula; macular folds and remains of hemovitreous in inferior retina. Macular optical coherence tomography showed a complete alteration of the retinal architecture. Given the finding of these lesions and the history of firearm impact, expectant management with strict periodic controls was suggested.

Conclusion: Description of a case of chorioretinitis sclopetaria, a rarely reported entity. Timely diagnosis and strict follow-up is of great importance in order to detect possible complications early.
