Purpose: To present a central retinal artery occlusion case in a healthy pregnant woman.
Case report: The case of a 29-year-old pregnant woman with sudden loss of visual acuity in the left eye is presented. The retina of the posterior pole was found to be very pale and edematous, with the papillomacular bundle partially preserved. A diagnosis of central retinal artery occlusion with patent cilioretinal artery was made. Metabolic and hematological studies were performed with normal results. After a month of follow-up, visual acuity did not improve from hand movement.
Conclusion: Pregnancy is associated with hormonal, metabolic, hematological, cardiovascular and immunological changes in the mother, which may have ophthalmological repercussions. However, central retinal artery occlusion is an unusual event, and can occur in healthy young pregnant patients without any systemic or ocular pathology.
