Objective: To describe the characteristics of corneal transplants performed in a public hospital in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay.
Methods: A retrospective study was designed where the cases of patients with corneal transplantation performed at the Hospital de Clínicas Dr. Manuel Quintela in Montevideo (Uruguay) between July 2018 and May 2022 were reviewed In each case, the indications for surgery, the waiting time for keratoplasty from the time of the diagnosis and the type of technique performed.
Results: We found 56 penetrating keratoplasties performed. The mean age of the patients was 58 ± 19.63 years (15-83) where 61% were male. In relation to the reason, 29 cases (51.8%) were performed with an optical purpose and 27 (48.2%) with a therapeutic/tectonic purpose as an emergencies. In relation to etiology of keratoplasties with optic purpose, 37.9% were due to keratoconus, 27.6% due to herpetic keratitis, 10.3% post-microbial (excluding viral), pseudophakic bullous keratopathy in 6.9%, retransplantation 6.9% and due to corneal leukoma of uncertain etiology 6.9%. The 43.9% were patients from Montevideo and 56.1% from other parts of Uruguay. For transplants with optical purposes, the mean waiting time for surgery was 26.6 ± 13.78 months (6-55).
Conclusion: Of all the procedures, almost half were tectonic, mainly caused by infections. The waiting time for procedures with an optical purpose was slightly more than 2 years.
