Objective: The present document was developed by the Argentinian Vitreo-Retinal Society (SARyV) with the goal of offering recommendations in order to unify nomenclature, classification, diagnosis, and treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) in Argentina.
Methods: A panel of SARyV experts working in subgroups on different AMD topics between March and May of 2021 produced reports of the designated topic, which were later discussed (in a virtual meeting) among all participants in order to get an early consensus. After that, a first draft of each chapter was drawn up, which was worked on and discussed in an asynchronous manner, until the final version was obtained, which led to the production of the present report. The topics discussed were epidemiology, genetics, diagnosis, classification, biomarkers, treatment, and the prevention of infections. The content information was obtained from an electronic search considering medical evidence-based principles, prioritizing systematic reviews, and randomized controlled clinical trials.
Results: The main concepts of epidemiology and genetics were updated. The recommended diagnostic methods and imaging biomarkers were described, unifying criteria for their classification and nomenclature. After reviewing the therapeutical options, the different available therapeutics schemes were also described. Finally, concepts for infection prevention of intravitreal injections procedures were established.
Conclusion: The SARyV has developed an AMD consensus-oriented for the Argentinian ophthalmologist, giving them clear and updated concepts for clinical practices based on scientific evidence.
