Abstract

Objective: To evaluate intraocular light scatter in myopic patients operated with posterior chamber phakic lens in order to assess cataract development.
Materials and methods: A retrospective case series study was performed including patients evaluated in 2020, operated between 2011-2016 with ICL lens. Main outcomes were: objective scattering index (OSI, as measured with HD Analyzer device) vault, visual acuity, spherical equivalent and cataracts development. Differences between ICL implanted in 2011-2013 and 2014-2016 years (models “without” and “with” central port respectively) were also evaluated.
Results: A total of 54 eyes from 27 patients of 34.2 ± 5.2 years old were included. Cataracts were not developed. OSI was lower than 3 in 43 eyes, in 10 eyes were between 3 to 4, and OSI in 1 eye was 4.2. The vault range was between 164 to 1000 µm, higher in lens without a central port (551.4 ± 31.7 µm, p=0.006). In the same group (ICL model without a central port) the preoperative spherical equivalent was higher (-10.97 ± 0.75 vs -8,56 ± 0,64 D; p: 0.01) and also the patient’s age at the time of surgery (36 ± 0.8 vs 32,5 ± 1 years old; p: 0.01) comparing results with the other ICL model (with central port). The uncorrected visual acuity was 0.1 ±0.1 LogMAR.
Conclusions: Most of the myopic eyes with ICL lens showed OSI values lower than 3, without cataracts development, with a follow-up of 4 to 9 years, achieving good visual outcomes.
