Abstract

Objective: To describe the characteristics of ocular trauma cases treated in Paraná (Entre Ríos), Argentina, over a one-year period.

Methods: Retrospective, descriptive study, including patients who had an ocular-orbital trauma, attended in a private ophthalmologic center, between July 1, 2022 and July 1, 2023, who were admitted to the institution's emergency room. Age, sex, context/location (traffic trauma, sports, home, rural) were evaluated. The best corrected visual acuity at the first consultation and that recorded at the discharge consultation. The time between the first consultation and the final consultation was also analyzed. The number of traumas in right eye, left eye, and the treatments and procedures performed were described.

Results: Out of 5,055 on-call consultations, 130 cases (2.6%) were included, 65 of which occurred at home. The mean age was 37.9 ± 23.4 years (3-88), with 83 cases; 63.8%) male and 47 female (36.2%). When comparing vision, it was found that one eye lost lines of vision, 24 eyes gained lines of vision and the rest were unchanged. Eleven eyes (8.5%) were admitted to the operating room.

Conclusion: Among the total consultations attended on-call in a high complexity and high volume private ophthalmology clinic in the city of Paraná, Entre Ríos province, Argentina, 2.6% of the cases attended during one year were due to oculo-orbital trauma. Half of them occurred at home, with most of the affected patients being males under 50 years of age.
