Background: To assess the relationship between different parameters of anterior and posterior segments in eyes with cataract and axial lengths less than 21.0 mm.
Methods: Observational and prospective study of a case series. During the period from April to September 2018, the biometric parameters of subjects undergoing an ultrasound examination were recorded as part of their presurgical routine (cataract surgery) with axial lengths less than 21.0 mm. The parameters of the anterior segment (anterior chamber depth, lens thickness) and the posterior segment (vitreous chamber depth) were measured with the Ocuscan RxP ultrasonic biometer (Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, Texas, USA).
Results: The study included 18 eyes of 13 patients (4 men, 9 women). Mean axial length was 20.45 ± 1.71 mm (19.27-20.98 mm). Mean anterior chamber depth was 2.27 ± 0.97 mm (1.87-2.84 mm). Mean lens thickness was 4.97 ± 0.82 mm (4.46-5.28 mm). Mean vitreous chamber depth was 13.21 ± 1.71 mm (12.26-13.97 mm). Mean age of the patients was 60.33 ± 34 years (45-79 years).
Conclusions: The measurements found for lens thickness, anterior chamber depth and posterior chamber depth have been different from those reported in eyes with normal axial length. The lens thickness of the cataractous lens showed values higher than those of a person with normal axial length.
