Abstract

Objective: A study is presented in which the retinas of patients whose vision was affected after observing the solar eclipse without any protection were evaluated.

Methods: A case-series retrospective study was performed including patients with clinical diagnosis of solar maculopathy, confirmed bay optic coherence tomography secondary to the solar eclipse ocurred in December 2020 in Argentina. In each patient was evaluated the visual acuity, ocular fundus and retinal OCT, with a monthly follow-up for a period of 3 months.

Results: Three patients were found, between 16 and 22 years old, with visual symptoms after having observed the solar event for a period of seconds to one minute without adequate eye protection. In all the patients, initial involvement and satisfactory restoration of the retinal ellipsoidal zone were observed, between 1 to 3 months after the event. Initial visual acuity was affected in one of the 3 patients, but fully recovered at 3 months. In no case treatment was performed.

Conclusions: In the present series, all the patients who reported a visual afection secondary to the eclipse of December 2020, had a structural alteration of the retina in the macular area, in the ellipsoid zone, with a subsequent satisfactory evolution, improving during the first quarter.
